What NOT TO DO when visiting the Monarch Butterflies Sanctuaries in Mexico

Don’t arrive with the crowds. During weekends the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuaries tend to get a lot of visitors. Therefore, preferably, choose a week day for your visit. It is not only more comfortable and less busy, it will also allow you more time to marvel with the butterflies, and isn’t that why you came for? All our tours are designed to visit the Monarch Butterflies during the quieter days of the week.

Don’t sleep in. The sanctuaries are in the mountain where weather conditions can change quickly. Often the best time to visit the overwintering sites is in the morning. Therefore, we stay in accommodations close to the sanctuaries, so we can be one of the first ones with the butterflies.

Don’t bring lots of snacks. The local families offer you a delicious antojitos (Mexican snacks) like quesadillas prepared on the wooden stoves, freshly made soups, traditional Mexican plates, etc. You are not only going to to taste amazing food for small money, you also support the locals that depend on the income. On our trips, we will give you the opportunity to recharge with this delicious food options after visiting the butterflies and of course we will point out our favorite food options. #ecotourism

Don’t bring big bills. Even though the sanctuaries are in the woods and infrastructure is limited, you might be surprised by the great souvenir shoppings. Every sanctuary has small wooden stalls where the local ladies sell beautiful and very inexpensive butterfly souvenirs that will catch your eye. Help them by bringing smaller bills of 50, 100 and 200 Mexican Pesos. #supportthelocals

Don't pass on the horses. Personally we like to hike, but sometimes it is a great idea to take the offer of the local people and enjoy a horse ride that brings you closer to the clusters.

You have some fun and at the same time you help the local people to make a living. #havefunandosomethinggood

Don’t forget to check on the current situation. Before you make all the way to the sanctuaries, you want to be sure that the Monarchs have arrived and that the sanctuaries are open to visitors. We are staying in constant contact with the people from the area, so we are always up to date. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions!
